  2. What is a good education? Is it one that covers as much as possible of human history and achievements, past and present? Or ode that gives graduates the ability to find employment promptly when they leave school? Is it a broad education or a specialized one? Should it provide students with a vast collection of facts, or merely train them to think? Should a future engineer gain only the knowledge that will enable him to do his job properly, or would a richer background improve his professional ability as well as his personal life? The debate goes on and on, with good arguments on both sides.

In the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries. the question was not even worth asking. A good education was, of course, a broad one based on the humanities. An educated man knew “something about everything”. He was familiar with the great deeds and the great ideas of the past. He had read extensively;he was able to use his own language correctly and often elegantly. He could join in any conversation about plants, planets, painters, or politics. He was at ease in the world, and he knew that his education would open to him any career that he might want to try. Even if he was mostly interested in literature, he had some knowledge of the sciences and the techniques of his time。

  42. Passage Three

Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage.

During the Christmas shopping rush in London, a story was reported of a tramp(流浪者)who, apparently no fault of his own, found himself locked in a well. known chain store late on Christmas Eve. No doubt the store was crowded with last. minute Christmas shoppers and the staff were dead beat and longing to get home. Presumably all the proper security checks were made before the store was locked and they left to enjoy the three-day holiday untroubled by customers desperate to get last-minute. Christmas presents.

However that may be, our tramp found himself alone in the store and decided to make the best of if. There was food, drink, bedding and camping equipment, of which he made good use. There must also have been television sets and radios. Though it was not reported if he took advantage of these facilities, when the shop re-opened, he was discovered in bed with a large number of empty bottles beside him. He seems to have been a man of good humor and philosophic temperament-as indeed tramps very commonly are. Everyone else was enjoying Christmas, so he saw no good reason why he should not do the same. He submitted(屈服), cheerful enough, to being taken away by the police. Perhaps he had had a better Christmas than usual. He was sent to prison for seven days. The judge awarded no compensation to the chain store for the food and drink our tramp had consumed. They had, in his opinion, already received valuable free publicity from the coverage the store received in the newspapers and on television.

    • C. by accident

    • B. channels in the sea bottom
    • C. the direction of the wind
    • D. variations in the coast line
  45. Passage Two

Questions 26 to 30 are based on the following passage.

Tides are created mainly by the pull of the moon on the earth. The moon's pull causes water in the oceans to be a little deeper at a point closest to the moon and also at a point farthest from the moon, on the opposite side of the earth. These two tidal “waves” follow the apparent movement of the moon around the earth and strike nearly every coast line at intervals of about twelve hours and twenty-five minutes. After reaching a high point, the water level goes down gradually for a little more than six hours and then begins to rise toward a new high point. Hence, most coast lines have two tides a day, and the tides occur fifty minutes later each day. Differences in the coast line and in channels in the ocean bottom may change the time that the tidal wave reaches different points along the same coast line. The difference in water level between high and low tide varies from day to day according to the relative positions of the sun and the moon. The sun also exerts a pull on the earth, although it is only about haft as strong as the pull of the tides arise higher and when they pull at right angles to one another. the tide is lower. The formation of the coast line and variations in the weather are additional factors which can affect the height of tides. Some sections of the coast are shaped in such a way as to cause much higher tides than are experienced in other areas. A strong wind blowing toward the shore may also cause tides to the higher.

Which of the following is right according to the passage?

    • A. Some coast lines do not have two tides each day.
    • B. Tides are not affected by the shape of coast line.
    • C. The sun has as much effect on tides as does the moon.
    • D. Tides usually rise to the same land day after day.

    • B. guard against the deceiving nature of advertisements
    • C. be familiar with various advertising strategies
    • D. avoid buying products that have strong emotional appeal
  50. Passage One

Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.

The appeal of advertising to buying motives can have both negative and positive effects. Consumers may be convinced to buy a product of poor quality or high price because of an advertisement. For example, some advertisement have appealed to people's desire for better fuel economy for their cars by advertising automotive products that improve gasoline mileage. Some of the products work. Others are worthless and a waste of consumers' money.

Sometimes advertising is intentionally misleading. A few years ago, a brand of bread was offered to dieters(节食者)with the message that there were fewer calories(热量单位, 卡)in every slice. It turned out that the bread was not dietetic(适合于节食的), but just regular bread. There were fewer calories because it was sliced very thin. but there were the same number of calories in every loaf.

On the positive side, emotional appeals may respond to a consumer's real concerns. Consider fire insurance. Fire insurance may be sold by appealing to fear of loss. But fear of loss is the real reason for fire insurance. The security of knowing that property is protected by insurance makes the purchase of fire insurance a worthwhile investment for most people. If consumers consider the quality of the insurance plans as well as the message in the ads, they will benefit from the advertising.

Each consumer must evaluate her or his own situation. Are the benefits of the product important enough to justify buying it? Advertising is intended to appeal to consumers, but it does not force them to buy the product. Consumer still controls the final buying decision.

    • Advertising can persuade the consumer to buy worthless product by______.
    • A. stressing their high quality
    • B. convincing him of their low price
    • C. maintaining a balance between quality and price
    • D. appealing to his buying motives
  51. The reason why the bread advertisement is misleading is that______.

    • A. thin slices of bread could contain more calories
    • B. the loaf was cut into regular slices
    • C. the bread was not genuine bread
    • D. the total number of calories in the loaf remained the same
