Adelaide contains many fine examples of early Australian architecture, including the town hall on King William Street—the wide main N-S thoroughfare. Built from designs by E.W. Wright, a former mayor of the city, the town hall's foundation stone was laid in 1863.

The city contains many statues and seven fountains. The most spectacular fountain, completed in 1968, is in Victoria Square, the center of the city's business section.
